Resume Tips and Job Hunting Advice from the Emurse Blog: Code Updates

Even Dolly Loves Us

You suggested the ability to quickly clone your other resumes. We listened. Emurse now allows you to add sections from previously created resumes, allowing you to quickly mix and match new resumes.

You’ve already filled out your work experience once before. Now it’s incredibly easy to copy it directly. A few small tweaks later and you’ll have a job specific resume. You’re able to pursue the career of your dreams without missing a beat.

After all, that’s the whole point.

Job Hunting Tip
: When applying for a specific position at a company, send them a specific resume. Tailor the summary or the objective to match the company’s needs. List your work experience in order of relevance to the applied position. Applying for a technology related job? Leave tap dancing off the skill set and replace it with something more related. Something geeky-cool, perhaps. Like bow hunting ;)

Knock knock

Who’s there? Customization. Customization who? That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far, but once I think of a punch line, it’s going to be a killer.

We’ve just pushed live the ability to rename sections to whatever you’d like. Want to make your “Work Experience” say “Relevant Experience” instead? Or perhaps you’d like to write it out in Spanish? Once you rename the section, you’re free to add another “Work Experience” section and do the same. Effectively, you can create any number of combinations of sections based on the templates that we’ve provided.

It’s just the first step in giving our users total control over their resume. Enjoy :)

How to: With your mouse, hover over the section title. A menu will pop up with all sorts of fun options, one of them, is “Rename Section.”

Rain, sleet, or snow

We deliver.

We’ve just pushed live a new backend for the “Send” tab. This version should be much more reliable, scalable and pleasant than the previous incarnation.

Beta is about getting the core structure as solid as possible. Everyone’s been so incredibly helpful with spotting out issues. Many users have taken to sending us detailed screen shots and word documents — awesome! We’re 10 times the service we were even a week ago because of it. Thank you :)

The more eyes we have searching out things, the better!

References Available Upon Request

And requested they were.

We keep track of user suggestions and base a lot of our release schedule off of them. We’ve been planning to implement the first wave of section customization first, but today the need for a resume section dedicated to references pulled into the lead.

Ask and you shall receive. A references section has been added! :) Enjoy.

Resume Tip: Generally speaking, references don’t belong on a resume. And the whole “references available on request” thing? Yeah, that’s kind of understood. If there are no references, people will request them if they’re needed. What’s more useful is to maintain a separate “Reference Sheet” that you can supply whenever requested. If this is what you’d like to do, it’s really easy with Emurse. Simply create a new Emurse resume and only add the References section. This will allow you to store your reference sheet conveniently right along side your resume :)

About time

We finally did it. We got the to the check list item that said “Emurse only blog.”

No more checking my personal site for emurse updates or IM’n Gavin. Right here baby, this is where the party’s at.

Since our public release a couple weeks ago, we’ve grown over 4000%, and the numbers keep climbing higher. Thank you to everyone for the massive amounts of feedback. We have a solid assessment of bugs and the things we need to do to bring Emurse to the next step, and we’re well under way. It’s all thanks to you.

Recent Updates:

  • Added new sections — Summary, Keywords, Course Work. These were the top three most requested sections. Custom sections are on deck. References after that.
  • Added ability to change e-mail address. Lot’s of folks were initially scared of us and signed up using fake e-mails. You can now self correct your accounts ;)
  • Click on “account” up in the top left — You can set custom key words and zipcode now for flexible, reliable job postings.
  • Usability improvements on creating new resumes.
  • Better description of differences between emurse and existing resumes. Do yourself a favor and go emurse, it’s much more fancy.
  • Visiting the share tab on a nonhosted resume was a bit confusing. It’ll now tell you what resume is hosted with a nice little link to help you get there.
  • Resume reviews are now in private testing — you’ll soon have the ability to have a professional reviewer look over your resume. It’s awesome.
  • Elegant template has hResume support — long term planning, ya know? It’s your data, and we want to make it as flexible as possible.
  • Added “Still Pending” as a Send item status, per user request. This particular member is using the status level to keep track of not just resumes he’s sent, but resumes he plans on sending. Great idea!
  • Template cleanup — notably, on Modern, if you do not list a degree type, you’ll no longer have miscellaneous characters floating around.
  • Some users were getting more than their fair share of notifications via e-mail. This has been fixed.
  • Tons of stability & performance stuff to help us adjust to the increased traffic levels.

We have some more things planned, and we appreciate the patience people have shown us while we grow. Beta is a fun time, and we’re really excited about where we’re headed!

Emurse is a powerful tool that lets you create and host your resume online — for free.
