    There used to be a time when people could market their skills, get hired, go to work, do a good job, and be appreciated for it. They would then go home with a feeling of pride that they contributed to a cause, and, in turn, they were motivated to work harder for their employer. Anymore, these behavioral interviews mark the beginning of employment that focuses more on personality and political games than on real work contribution. Is there any wonder why people are stressed out and disenchanted with their jobs?

    Behaviour questions are not mind games, personality questions or politics.

    Behavioural questions are used because the best predictor of past behaviour is future behaviour, under similar circumstances. In other words if you did it in the past, chances are you will do it in the future.

    Anyone can answer a what would you do if…. question and define…question. Talking about what you actually did instead of what you would do provides more complete information on how well you can perform the job you are being interviewed for.

    Behavioral Nature of Interview process today:

    First, attempt to reach a human being, in advance of the churn process. What dynamic does that set up? Imagine, if the department is called Human resources, than the human factor was appear to be paramount.

    This has all changed.
    Todays screening is the ultimate dehumanization.
    The employer can establish your Salary in advance, delay your employment to their advantage, maneuver you into one position with the intent of sending you sideways into another. The degree of control now exercised by computer based screening methods is negative to the worker’s bargaining and influence over their hiring process.

    These questions suck. A lot of HR people pick and choose which questions they want to throw you way and then read it from a script. Come on!! Get real. I prepared for hours…more than what I usually prepare for a class for my Masters degree. I am not good at story telling, but I am a great manager. These questions don’t prove anything, I don’t care what the stats say about future performance. If you can act or come up with great stories, then you get the job. How about a fair system that includes references.

    the concept of behaviourial interviewing and that past behaviour is a good indicator of future behaviour is eroding slowly. Just like behaviourial interviews were a blessing during the days of unstructured interviews, similarly, Performance based interviews are a much more valuable indicator of fitment for a job, Company, and Org. culture than Behaviourial interviews.

    Jim’s frustration is right but you should accept that there are positives that need to be integrated into our interviewing processes from both the approaches.

    Agreed the best predictor of the future is usually the past in any context. However, I find issue with this mode for fixed length interviews particularly for experienced candidates being interviewed by inexperienced interviewers - more prevalent than you would think. To ask someone with exceptional experiences “Tell me about a time when ….” will likley yield a long-pause as that person has no doubt had MANY situations to reflect on. In many instances these time-bound interviewing sessions end up rating someone’s ability to be spontaneous, articulate, and concise more often than the behavior itself and if a candidate stumbles because they have had too many experiences and have difficulty identifying one …. well you get the point …. in large companies today, the evaluators are often ill-trained and unable to decipher a behavior so they rate the aesthetic response to the question.

    Behavioral interviews are meant to be used as part of the entire interview process. Employers should not just be using behavioral interviews to determine if someone is right for a job. Along with typical interview questions, pre-employment testing, and reference checks, behavioral interviews are a great part of the process.

    These questions do suck — but in a good way. They really stretch the candidate and get them to a place where they can’t do a BS song-and-dance. And if they do attempt to BS their way thru, it really becomes transparent.

    I agree whole-heartedly with your last point. Interviews should only be a part of what a hiring official looks at. References are critical. The resume is critical. The experience of the candidate and their match into the organization’s culture is critical.

    Any manager relying solely on interview questions and missing these other pieces deserves what they get — mis-cast hires which turn in to unhappy and disengaged employees. The ultimate results? Organizational failure.

    As a manager responsible for hiring my staff, I’ve been using the behavioral interview method (with significant weight on resume and references) with tremendous success for over years now. It works.

    If you are a great manager, you should welcome a behavioural interview as the opportunity to prove it: not by ‘telling stories’ but by giving real life evidence of the great things you have done. Believe me, it is not too difficult to tell who is giving out BS - a few follow-up questions will usually do it.

    I have an interview tomorrow. At first, when I read all the questions I thought, how am I going to prepare for this. However, after giving it some thought, I feel this could actually help me because I know I can do the job I’m applying for; however, there may be another candidate with more “experience” on their resume. Sometimes those people get the job over someone who doesn’t when in reality, they are not right for the job just because they have the experience. A traditional interview doesn’t always afford you the time to really show who you are and why and how you would be good for the position. I am great at preparing, so this could actually benefit me over the other candidates.

    I think behavorial interviewing is ridiculous. One cannot possibly think of every situation that they have ever been in and probably have to make something up. I think this is said because then a lot of interviews are just built up out of lies.

    I think behavioral interviewing is BS only to the extent that any other facet to interview prep is as well: punctuality, professional aesthetics, general research, etc. I like to think of it as just another item that I have to appropriately prepare for. It sucks, but unemployment sucks worse.

    What’s with phone interviews, it’s hard enough to hear what someone has to say over the phone and asking someone to repeat themselves in an interview makes it seem as if your not paying attention. I think my resume and references should be more than enough to hire me. How someone reacts to questions they don’t understand shouldn’t be an evauluation of self. Screw these questions….

    I don’t like the behavioral interviews. It is a set of questions that someone has grabbed out of a datebase and expects you to answer on the spot. I have an interview next week. The large company I work for you don’t get to see the questions. You go into the room blind-sided and no advance information. I just feel in a standard old fashion interview those small probing questions that are”What did you do in your last job” it seems to relax the interviewee a little more and they can be more honest and open about what they did and what responsibilities they had im there previous position.

    IMHO, behavioral testing such as this can actually end up favoring certain types of candidates and blocking out others. Effectively, if you have never had a significant disagreement at work, limited work experience, or most of your experiences have resolved well, then you will pass, even if you aren’t very good for the job you are interviewing for.

    It is a system that assumes that people never learn or modify their behaviors based on experience. Something that you might have said at 18 in your first job isn’t what you might have said at 35 after 15 years in the trenches. Effectively, 15 years of experience and learned abilities to handle stressful situations would be lost.

    Overall, it’s a system designed mostly to make it easy for HR people to think they are being scientific about their jobs rather than actually doing their jobs, getting the right people into the right positions.
