How to Write an Entry Level Resume

General

It is important to first explain what resumes are and how they should be used. A resume is a sales document. It should be designed to show off your “features” (skills and qualities) and guide the reader towards “closing the deal” (in this case, hiring). As a sales document, it needs to be less about you and more about how you will make the organization you are applying to better.

This is largely why resumes should be tailored to the specific position and company that you are applying to. Adjusting your resume for each recipient allows you to tailor your “pitch” to their specific needs and requirements.

Example Resume Objective

For entry level resumes, a quality resume objective is extremely effective. Resume objectives should be specific and concise. It should set the stage for your entry level application.

An example of an effective entry level resume objective would be:

An entry level marketing position with a new media company. Open to relocation.

Example Resume Summary

Another important feature of an entry level resume is a “Summary” section. This section should include three or four bulleted items that help promote any achievements or personal skills/traits that are relevant to the position. While the Objective tells the employer what it is that you are looking for, the Summary allows an employer to quickly gauge you as a person.

Work Experience and Curriculum

If you are short on experience, consider class projects you may have been involved in. Often, organizations such as fraternities and sororities can offer significant chances to engage in “real world” business scenarios, such as budgeting.

These kinds of activities are generally interesting and relevant to the jobs you will be applying. Most employers know you will be a little short on experience — that’s why you are looking for something that is entry level! Just remember to put your best foot forward and amplify the positives you do have.
